Deputy Director

About NBWJI. The National Black Women’s Justice Institute (NBWJI) aims to eliminate racial and gender disparities in the U.S. criminal-legal system that are responsible for its disproportionate impact on Black women, girls, and gender-expansive people. We engage in rigorous research and capacity building in order to transform the current system and promote policy change that centers and uplifts the voices and experiences of system-impacted Black women and girls. Through our work, we seek to dismantle the punitive paradigm driving the U.S. criminal-legal system and build in its place pathways to healing and opportunity. What you’ll do. The Deputy Director plays a key role within the National Black Women’s Justice Institute (NBWJI), assisting the Executive Director to operationalize the organization’s strategic vision, achieve its goals, and oversee daily operations. Reporting to the executive director (ED), the Deputy Director will have both internal and external facing responsibilities, including implementing programs and policies, as well as supervising staff and building relationships with key stakeholders. This position requires strong leadership skills and the ability to work collaboratively across teams and with all levels of staff.


Responsibilities and Duties


Staff Development & Culture, & Management (40%)

  • Recruit, train, mentor, and supervise a diverse and talented team of researchers, trainers, and communications staff.

  • Provide guidance and support to staff through regular supervision, constructive feedback, and evaluations to align staff performance with NBWJI’s values and objectives.

  • Foster a positive, collaborative, and inclusive work environment that promotes staff engagement, professional growth, and accountability.

  • Provide weekly supervision to department heads to ensure goals alignment, as well as trouble-shoot and manage potential threats and challenges to the work.

  • Develop and implement training programs and professional development opportunities for staff.


Internal Operations & Management (30%)

  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure role clarity, performance standards, effective collaboration, and consistent delivery of high quality work.

  • Facilitate effective interdepartmental collaboration across NBWJI’s diverse teams.

  • Ensure programs are compliant with all relevant regulations, grants, and organizational policies.

  • Assist the Executive Director with managing project budgets.

  • Work with the executive director to determine program funding and resource needs.


Program Monitoring & Impact (20%)

  • Oversee the monitoring and evaluation of NBWJI program performance to strengthen and improve project and initiatives and ensure all program deliverables and timelines are met.

  • Oversee the development of annual goals and workplans for the research, capacity-building, and communications departments.

  • In collaboration from department heads, establish clear metrics of success and regular reporting processes.

  • Provide the Executive Director regular program updates and advise on potential threats and challenges to NBWJI projects and initiatives.

  • Advise the Executive director on opportunities for organizational growth, improvement, and innovation.


External Relations & Other Responsibilities (10%)

  • Represent NBWJI at relevant community events, meetings, and conferences.

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with funders, partners, and community stakeholders.

  • Assist the executive director on other projects, as needed.



Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Minimum 7 years in a senior management or supervisory role.

  • Demonstrated subject matter expertise in a related field (e.g., criminal/juvenile legal system, gender-based violence, school discipline/pushout) and application of an intersectional framework.

  • Demonstrated experience in program management, operations, and financial oversight.

  • Strong knowledge and experience with research and evaluation methods and writing.

  • Proven ability to lead, motivate, and develop a diverse team.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking and presentation abilities.

  • Excellent ability to build and maintain strong relationships with diverse stakeholders, including staff, board members, donors, and community partners.

  • Commitment to NBWJI’s mission and values

  • Experience collaborating with system-impacted Black women and girls.


Salary and benefits: The salary range is $120,000-$125,000, commensurate with experience. Employees also receive a benefits package including health coverage, short and long-term disability, and paid time off. The position is full-time (FLSA: Exempt).
